Probably because of the changing age of our society, there is now an interest in problems associated with psychoses of the senium, an interest that was not nearly as great just a few years ago. There are various terms used to designate states of psychosis—senile dementia, organic brain disease, chronic brain syndrome, psychosis with cerebral arteriosclerosis, and others. In the main, these represent diagnoses that differ in two broad ways. Psychoses are thought to originate primarily either from brain cell loss or from such vascular problems as obstructions in the blood vessels. While the latter are thought to result in more sudden onset of psychotic symptoms than the psychoses of neural origin, the fact is that it is often very hard to distinguish the two kinds of psychoses. In fact, from a behavioral point of view, if not a biomedical one, it is not always possible to differentiate these from non-organic depressive psychoses in later life. Often, only after spontaneous improvement in the depressive case can the two types of psychoses be told apart.
Thus, behaviorally at least, the goal is first to distinguish between normal and abnormal aging, that is, to identify organic brain disease.
