Hoodia
What is Hoodia ?
The heralded south African cactus featured on "60 Minutes", "The Today Show", and in Oprah's "O Magazine" is probably the new miracle supplement for safe, effective weight loss for everyone wanting to lose weight.Hoodia gordonii (Hoodia) is an all-natural appetite suppressant known for having no side effects or conflicts that are associated with other weight-loss products.
How Hoodia Works.
It essentially suppresses the appetite by tricking the brain into thinking that you're full when you're not: Scientists explain that the active ingredient in Hoodia works within the hypothalamus, the satiety center of the brain, by releasing a chemical compound similar to glucose, only much stronger. The hypothalamus receives this signal as an indication that enough food has been consumed and therefore suppresses the appetite.

AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE – AGE-SENSITIVE AND AGE-INSENSITIVE MEASURES - SURVIVORSHIP
Birren (1968) made a comparison of test scores between elderly men who survived five years following the testing period and men of similar age who did not survive. The men and tests are described briefly in a later section of this chapter, under the heading Health.
It is interesting that Birren's conclusions regarding survivorship are not unlike those involving psychoses. He wrote that the original measurements that most distinguished between the subsequent survivors and non-survivors were those tests that contained verbal information. However, the measurements involving speed of response, known to be associated with age, did not show significant differences between them. The implication is that behavior slows with advancing age, and this is independent of disease. "In contrast, the relative intactness of the brain . . . likely closely reflects the presence or absence of vascular disease and influences the amount of stored information."
Those still surviving some 11 years later, now of average age 71 years, were again compared to the non-survivors in regard to their original test scores (Granick, 1971). This time both initially low Verbal and Performance scores were associated with earlier death; however, the Verbal scores were still somewhat more apparent in the differentiation.
Not many studies had been carried out making such analyses, and among those few that did, differing results were reported (see Botwinick, 1977). Thus, it seems best to keep conclusions regarding survivorship tentative, even though testable speculations are worth considering. Perhaps decline in verbal skills reflects both the states of organic brain disease and impending death. It may well be that brain deterioration hastens death and in this way both are reflected by decrement in verbal language skills.
