AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE – INITIAL AND LATER LEVELS OF ABILITY - DATA DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM OF INITIAL LEVEL

A most comprehensive set of data dealing with the problem of initial level and subsequent decline was seen in the reports by Foulds and Raven (1948) and by Foulds (1949). Foulds and Raven gave both a non-verbal test of logical reasoning (Progressive Matrices) and a vocabulary test (Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale, which is similar to the WAIS Vocabulary subtest). Their sample size was very large, and they were able to plot the test scores in relation to age for different percentiles, i.e., ability levels at each age grouping. Foulds and Raven found that, with the non-verbal test, decline with age was seen at every ability level. Moreover, the lower the initial level, the greater the decline. With the verbal test, they only found decline with age when the initial level was low. When the ability level at early life was average, the age decline was seen as minimal. On the other hand, when higher ability levels were examined, the verbal function increased with advancing years. These conclusions are similar to those that can be drawn from a more recent study based on very different tests (Riegel and Riegel, 1972).
These results may be reframed as follows: In later life, high level elderly people are characterized by very high verbal ability independent of age; they are characterized by high non-verbal intelligence, however, only when compared to others of the same age. With low ability people, both functions decrease in later life and are low by any comparison. People of average ability maintain verbal ability with only slight decreases, if any, but they show appreciable decrements in non-verbal intelligence.
The cross-sectional and longitudinal studies thus yielded conclusions that may seem apart but are not—they can be resolved by referring to the two questions raised at the start of this section: Initially high level people tend to end up high level relative to other members of their cohort. This seems particularly true for verbal skills. However, the extent of decline or improvement seems unrelated to initial ability levels. Another way of saying this is that a high level person may be seen to decline more than a low level person, but still end up at a higher level.
