AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE – BIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS - HEALTH
Regardless of the type of organization of intelligence in later life, whatever the role of environment in mental abilities, it is logical to assume that biological mechanisms mediate the behaviors we class as intelligent. Investigations of aging mechanisms are few and constitute just a beginning.
Health
A gross assessment of the role of these mechanisms was implicit in a study which attempted to examine older men who were so unusually healthy as to be atypical or non-representative of people of their ages (Botwinick and Birren, 1963). They were selected to meet the requirement of no apparent disease of any kind even after intensive medical examination. First, there was a general medical screening, and the unhealthy subjects were disqualified. Then, there was a second, intensive medical examination, during which several men (Group II) were medically separated from the highly select sample (Group I). Actually, Group II was composed of men who were much healthier than those normally seen in a representative sample of similar age. "The abnormalities in this group were mild, but did not inhibit the physical or social functioning of the subjects, and were generally asymptomatic. These subjects were believed to approximate more closely the usual medical concept of a 'normal' aged group" (Lane and Vates).
The men of both Groups I and II were given the 11 WAIS subtests along with 12 other tasks, most of which were cognitive in nature. Although statistically significant differences were found with only six of the 23 tests, the actual scores were poorer for the less healthy group than for the optimally healthy group in all but two tests. The Performance tests more than the Verbal tests differentiated the two groups. These results suggested that even slight alterations of optimum health of the elderly can adversely affect their intellectual functioning.
This study by Botwinick and Birren was compatible with that of a later study in which less healthy people were examined (Correll, Rokosz, and Blanchard, 1966). In this later study, health ratings were made, and these were correlated to a moderate or low extent with intelligence scores. Of greater interest, however, it again was the more age-sensitive measures which correlated with health status, rather than the less age-sensitive, verbal measures.
