AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE – BIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS - CARDIOVASCULAR FUNCTION
This interpretation of the results of Obrist et al. received support in an interesting and important study by Wilkie and Eisdorfer (1971). This study is a unique one in that it tried to explain intellectual loss over a 10-year period among elderly people.
Wilkie and Eisdorfer hypothesized that since hypertension increases with age and is related to a variety of behavioral functions, intellectual decline over time would be related to heightened blood pressure. They measured the former with the WAIS and the latter by standard technique of the diastolic pressure. Two types of WAIS scores were recorded —the scores made at time 1 and at time 2, ten years later; and delta scores, the difference between scores made at time 1 and time 2.
While their study, initially, was not designed to test this hypothesis, the longitudinal nature of their program permitted it. The people tested initially were divided into two age groups, one 60-69 years (at the time of initial testing) and the other, 70-79 years. They were further divided into groups of normal pressures, borderline pressures, and high diastolic pressures.
Wilkie and Eisdorfer reported that in the younger group (60-69) the three levels of blood pressure were related to different extents of intellectual change. Delta scores on the overall WAIS and on the Performance part (again the subtests sensitive to normal aging) were greatest for the high blood pressure group: intellectual decline was greatest for the group with highest diastolic pressure. None of the three blood pressure groups showed significant changes in the Verbal part of the WAIS.
Interestingly, while the normal blood pressure group also showed decline in total WAIS and in the Performance part (although not as great a decline as the high blood pressure group) the borderline blood pressure group, the middle group, showed improvement over the course of the years. In explanation of this result, Wilkie and Eisdorfer (1971 referred to a contention by Obrist (1964): "mild elevations of BP (blood pressure) may be necessary among the aged to maintain adequate cerebral circulation."
