AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE – BIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS - HEARING LOSS
It is not necessary to refer to global biological factors such as brain and cardiovascular functions to see relationship with intellectual performance—specific and relatively simple sensory functions also are important. A study demonstrating this dramatically with hearing loss was reported by Granick, Kleben, and Weiss (1976).
They correlated measured hearing ability and intellectual performance in two samples of people: One comprised the atypically healthy men discussed under "Health" above; the other comprised aged women, each with some significant medical problem but free of emotional pathology. Both the atypically healthy men and not-so-healthy women showed the typical age decline in auditory function of high tone loss. In both groups, however, these declines were in the normal range for people of their ages (mean about 76 years).
Hearing losses were correlated with cognitive test performances, including those on the WAIS. The results showed associations between hearing losses and test scores for both samples such that the greater the loss, the poorer the performance. Unlike the data of health status differences, the Verbal tests reflected this more than the non-Verbal tests. In particular, performances on the Information and Vocabulary tests, the tests more resistant to normal aging, were among those most related to heraring loss. It was concluded that "aged subjects may be more intellectually capable than their test performances suggest ..."
