AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE IN GENERAL
Often, it is exceedingly difficult to organize great masses of intelligence test data and to impart meaning to them. Factor analysis and principal component analysis have been found helpful in this regard. Aging studies using these techniques have tended to show that the single most important element in the organization of intelligence is a general ability. It is overall ability, rather than specific abilities, which most distinguishes one person from another. The amount of education a person has contributes more to this general ability than does his age. Level of education is clearly related to ability levels of young adults. The literature suggests that people of high initial level retain their verbal abilities when old and, while they decline in their perceptual-integrative abilities, the extent of decline still keeps them at a level above their initially less able age peers.
It is logical to assume that intelligence is mediated by biological mechanisms. The study of these mechanisms in relation to age is only in its beginning stages. Data to date suggest that brain states are adversely affected by cardiovascular pathology and, in turn, affect behavior adversely. For example, one recent study showed that people in their 60s with high blood pressure declined over a 10-year period in intelligence to an extent over and above that of persons with lower blood pressure. Not only broad biological mechanisms, but simple sensory loss relates to intellectual performance. Good hearing ability enhances performance.
Taken together, the aging literature points the way for future research —research focusing upon the description and explanation of age changes in intelligence. It has not yet pointed the way to tests that are completely appropriate for the elderly in content and in interest.
