Laboratory investigations of problem solving often do not differentiate among the various processes that go into successful performance. More often than not, what is assessed is the combination of processes—the forming of ideas, the testing of them for adequacy, the accepting and rejecting of them. Investigations of thinking sometimes are limited to the formation of ideas. This includes both the ability to differentiate among stimulus elements and the ability to develop organizing concepts to encompass them. Defined in these ways, problem solving includes thinking, but measures of thinking do not necessarily include problem solving. COGNITIVE FACTORS - Intelligence To the extent that intelligence declines in later life, it would seem reasonable to expect that the ability to think and solve problems would decline also. Actually, this expectation receives only partial support in a very sparse literature. It is obvious that some minimum intelligence is necessary to solve problems, but, given this, is the level of intelligence sufficient to account for the different ability levels in solving problems? Studies by Young (1966, 1971) and by Arenberg (1968, 1974) suggested that the answer may well be, "No," but most other studies suggest otherwise. *273\220\8*
