Health status is a broad catch-all category and it does not tell which organ systems, what mechanisms relate to changed intellectual functioning with age. It would seem logical to expect that the central nervous system would be one such system. Obrist, Busse, Eisdorfer, and Kleemeier (1962) studied brain wave patterns (electroencephalograms, EEG) of older people and related them to their Wechsler intelligence test scores. No relationship was found with people residing in the community, volunteering to be examined. When, however, the same study was repeated with people who were mental hospital patients, and with people who were residents in an old age home, small, but significant, correlations were found. Diffuse slowing of the brain pattern and a slow alpha rhythm were associated with low intelligence test scores. It would seem that this association, found with people having arteriosclerosis and not with people relatively free from this pathology, is attributable to the poorer nourishment to the brains of the former group. A faulty circulation of blood due to a damaged cardiovascular system may result in deprived brains, making for both EEG slowing and lower test scores. *267\220\8*
