AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE – TWO PARTS OF CROSS-SECTIONAL AND LONGITUDINAL STUDIES
Another longitudinal study was reported in two parts—after 10 years of testing (Eisdorfer and Wilkie, 1973) and after 15 years (Wilkie and Eisdorfer, 1973). People of average age 64 and 72 were tested four times in the course of 10 years and it was seen that both age groups declined in their performance over this time. The study was continued for five more years with three additional testings. Decline was apparent in the later years, but of special interest was the first 10-year longitudinal period of the 15-year study. The demand of seven testings over a 15-year period left remaining only those most intellectually able, and these people showed no decline in the next 10 years. The total original group, those tested only over 10 years, did show decline. There are other important studies, for example a 20-year retest of people aged about 65 at the start (Blum, Fosshage, and Jarvik, 1972) and a 35-to-40 years retest of people aged in the 20s and 30s at the start (Gilbert, 1973). From all these and other studies, it can be concluded that there is decline with age, but the decline is not great until very late in life. The decline is mainly with the perceptual-integrative tasks, especially when speed is involved. Verbal skills are maintained, except in very advanced old age. And, very important, individual differences are great at all ages, and become greater with advancing age. These results, it will be recognized, are similar to those seen in cross-sectional studies. *265\220\8*
