AGE AND BEHAVIOR: INTELLIGENCE – INITIAL AND LATER LEVELS OF ABILITY

Do the initially more able people—people who go far in school when young, perhaps—end up more able in later life? In other words, do people of high initial ability decline less in old age than do people of lower initial ability? Obviously, the way to answer these questions is by longitudinal research where people of different ability levels are followed from young to old age. Equally obvious, this is not easy to do. There are, however, some longitudinal data, even if severely limited. Also, there are educated guesses that can be made on the basis of cross-sectional studies. First, the longitudinal data: Owens (1959) located people who 30 years previously had been given the Army Alpha intelligence test on entering college. He retested them with the same test and thus had data at two points in the life cycle—ages 19 and 49 years. While these ages hardly involve elderly adults, the study indicated that, to middle age at least, initial ability was not a factor in subsequent decline or improvement. A similar conclusion was reached by Baltes, Nesselroade, Schaie, and Labouvie (1972) for adults of all ages through the 70s. The limitation of this latter study, however, was that the time period of change was only 7 years. The cross-sectional studies are more comprehensive but, again, they provide suggestions more than observed age changes. In cross-sectional studies, the major difficulty in investigating the relationship between initial level and later level of intelligence is that of determining what the initial level was. Unless we follow a large number of people over many years of testing, the determination of what the initial level was may be so based upon tenuous assumptions as to involve criteria of initial level that are less than completely satisfactory. For example, the highest completed grade in school, or the occupation of the person tested, has been used as an index of initial level. It was already indicated that these indices are not always adequate because intelligence may not find expression in opportunities to go to school or to get good jobs. *260\220\8*
